Review: Delirium by Lauren Oliver

Title- Delirium
Author- Lauren Oliver
Publisher- HarperTeen
At First Glance-My opinion before reading the book based on the synopsis, reviews I have read and cover attraction.

Want a sneak peak at Delirium? HarperTeen and Lauren Oliver is kind enough to provide us the first chapter of Delirium. Trust me, One chapter, one page, one sentence is all you need to get into this book.
First chapter of Delirium.

First sentence in Book-
"The most dangerous sicknesses are those that make us believe we are well."

--Proverb 42, The Book of Shhh

(Don't like reading long reviews? Juts scroll down to the 'Long Story Short')

Plot- Once known as one of the strongest emotions a human can feel, Love has become a threat to mankind. In the Old days Love was known as a good thing and even sought out. That is, until scientists figured out that Love or referred in the book as 'Amor Deliria Nervosa' is the cause of many things that were known as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, heart disease and more. In Delirium scientists have found a way to extract/eradicate love and have demanded that all citizens receive the procedure at the age of eighteen. In the book we also see the government making most of the decisions such as who everyone marries, their jobs and even control what literature they should read (list of banned books in Delirium can be found here.)
Lena, the MC of the book is not only close to turning eighteen she WANTS this disease that is inside of her to be removed. Everyone reminds her of how easy life is after the procedure: Carefree, happy, no worries. Lena is of course, eats this stuff up and eagerly awaits the procedure. Not to mention her family history with members who have fallen victim to deliria, such as her mother who resisted the cure and eventually committing suicide, putting her to shame among society.
Ninety-Five days before her procedure she meets Alex. A mysterious guy and she does what is looked down upon in her community and what she fears most. She falls in love.

So as I have stated before, the premise for this story is just so COMPLETELY out there. I mean Love causing diseases? Really? I doubt in this world that anyone would be willing to line up to get this 'cure'. But I have to admit, other than that the plot was pretty damn good. In the book we see the pressures that Lena faces in society. The girls unable to associate with boys because of the risk of them developing 'deliria' and the rules that are imposed on them shows us how much the government really wants to keep this 'deliria/disease' down as well as the consequences of the disease.

Another main issue we constantly see is Lena's struggle to fight of the disease-Love- she has for Alex. Unlike many stories where the MC female falls in love with a male at first sight (Cough, Twilight, cough) Her love develops throughout the whole story. Which makes it much more believable and relatable. Not only do I feel sympathy for Lena I can actually LIKE her as a character. In many reviews i've read I see that the issue of her not 'seeing what is actually happening around her' is brought up a lot. Of course she can't see what the government is doing! She was brought up to fear Love and is constantly reminded of her mother who fell 'victim' to it. I personally felt like I was inside the story as everything developed. Laurens way of describing things is really great and made the story that much better

Characters-
Lena Holloway in the beginning was a plain character. Of course thats due to the setting and environment she grew up with so I can't blame her there, But as the story progresses we see her developing more of an opinion and personality which again, makes the story that much better. She also seems to rationalize things and I really like that a lot about her. Instead of going along with her feelings she rejects the feelings she has for Alex in the beginning but then begins to realize what Love is. This in my opinion makes her much more of an independent character.

Alex was mysterious. He held his own secrets and throughout the book we can see he's kind and feels a certain way about Love. Not only does he want Lena to realize what Love is he himself holds a secret that endangers them both. In my opinion Alex was ok. We didn't really get much time with him in the book but when we did I found him to be bearable and romantic. But that's it.

Long Story Short

I liked the story. Sure it may be unrealistic but heck, its fiction! So putting that aside I felt like I was really in the story. I loved Lena and really understood her conflict with Love and her feelings. Unlike many books I found the pace of the story to be really good. I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would, the hype that was made for it was a little over the top. The romance? Well in my opinion it was plenty. Action? I'd say there are a couple of scenes where action is displayed and where you begin to grip the book as you eagerly wait to turn the page. Awesomeness? Not so much. The book was a good read and would recommend to anyone who loves dystopian novels, forbidden romance, a little bit of action and wants a read to keep you entertained.
Memorable Quotes (Spoiler Free)
"Still, I worry. They say that in the old days, love drove people to madness. That's bad enough. The Book of Shhh also tells stories of those who died because of love lost or never found, which is what terrifies me the most.  The deadliest of all deadly things: it kills you both when you have it, and when you don't."

"I love you. Remember. They cannot take it"
"I think fleetigly that maybe the stories I heard when I was little were true- maybe Invalids really are monsters, freaks. Then I feel ashamed. He just saved my life."
"He saved my Life-from the raiders. From the people who are supposed to protect us and keep us safe. From the people who are supposed to keep us safe from the people like Alex."

P.S. The ending was just unpredictable. I did not expect it. So Brace yourself.

In My Mailbox #2

In My Mailbox is a meme hosted by The Story Siren

IMM is basically a summary of what books I've gotten/received in the week of 11/21-11/26!

So after my last IMM and my first ARC I got excited when Harper Collins  and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Accepted my request to read and review several of their books! I also got some great finds from the library as well!

I also got a surprise in the mail from a very awesome author, Daisy Whitney! The author of The Mockingbirds  sent me bookmarks, a autographed sticker and a special note just for me! I guess that'd be referred to as 'swag'? I love how Daisy interacts with her fans and takes the time to send stuff to them and she's a brilliant writer as well! I just recently got her book and will review next week.

For Review

From the Library-

So I cant wait to start reading! I've already begun on Delirium and am LOVING IT! I also can't wait to read The Lying Game and Once in a Full Moon, seeing how I recognize the authors and love the Pretty little liars and heard that the Vampire kisses series was good.

So what have you guys gotten this week? Are you guys familiar with Jodi Picoult? If so which book of hers is your favorite?

The Dystopia Challenge

Dystopia Challenge
Hosted by BA reading Challenges and BA reading challenges hosts many different challenges.
So if your looking for a challenge, be sure to drop by their blog!
Also thanks to reader recommended for her post otherwise i'd have never known about this challenge!

The Dystopia Challenge starts one minute past midnight, 1st of January 2011 and end the 31st of December 2011. The challenge is basically to read dystopian novels (avid fan of them) and choose from one of the challenge levels below to complete.

Challenge Levels
  1. Asocial–  Choose 5 books to read
  2. Contagion – Choose 15 books to read
  3. Soldier – Choose 30 books to read
  4. Drone – Choose 50 books to read
  5. Conditioned – Choose 75 books to read

For extra hard challenges
  1. Brainwashed – Choose 76-125 books to read
  2. Totalitarian – Choose 126-200 books to read
So as challenging these levels seem to be, i'm going to have to go for Contagion. Heck, i'm not so sure there's actually 200 DYSTOPIAN novels out there! But hopefully I'll reach Contagion!

So check out all the other challenges that BA hosts by clicking here
I'll post the dystopia list i'll read by this week

Upcoming Reviews: At First Glance

What do I have in store for the following week? Well I'm glad you asked!

Synopsis

Before scientists found the cure, people thought love was a good thing. They didn’t understand that once love -the deliria- blooms in your blood, there is no escaping its hold. Things are different now. Scientists are able to eradicate love, and the governments demands that all citizens receive the cure upon turning eighteen. Lena Holoway has always looked forward to the day when she’ll be cured. A life without love is a life without pain: safe, measured, predictable, and happy.
But with ninety-five days left until her treatment, Lena does the unthinkable: She falls in love

At First Glance- "What kind of book is this?" was the first thought I had when I read the synopsis on Goodreads. Why would 'Love' ever become an issue to the point where the government has to eradicate it and the people just 'agree' with it? I know this is just a book but the premise for this dystopian future is just so unrealistic. I didn't even have to finish reading the synopsis to know what the plot would be about; Lena falling in love and it becomes an issue and danger to her. The synopsis is interesting but didn't really make me want to go and pre-order the book but only to add it to my TBR pile seeing as it's going to help me achieve my 2011 challenge. The cover is pretty interesting. Transparent letters that display a picture of a girl behind them and immediately I thought that the girl, Lena, was 'trapped and prisoner' of deleria. I do love the cover and think it goes well with the synopsis.
Reviews I read- I've read several reviews on Delirium and from what I read the book seems to be receiving a lot of praise and positive from bloggers. On goodreads, the book seems to have received an average rating of 4.31 stars out of 5. So I guess it's better than what the synopsis claims. I'll read the book today and post a review tomorrow.

Next up we have...

Synopsis-

When seventeen-year-old Ellie starts seeing reapers - monstrous creatures who devour humans and send their souls to Hell - she finds herself on the front lines of a supernatural war between archangels and the Fallen and faced with the possible destruction of her soul.
A mysterious boy named Will reveals she is the reincarnation of an ancient warrior, the only one capable of wielding swords of angelfire to fight the reapers, and he is an immortal sworn to protect her in battle. Now that Ellie's powers have been awakened, a powerful reaper called Bastian has come forward to challenge her. He has employed a fierce assassin to eliminate her - an assassin who has already killed her once.
While balancing her dwindling social life and reaper-hunting duties, she and Will discover Bastian is searching for a dormant creature believed to be a true soul reaper. Bastian plans to use this weapon to ignite the End of Days and to destroy Ellie's soul, ending her rebirth cycle forever. Now, she must face an army of Bastian's most frightening reapers, prevent the soul reaper from consuming her soul, and uncover the secrets of her past lives - including truths that may be too frightening to remember.

At First Glance- So this is different. I love that Cortney introduced a new plot into the YA scene. A plot where archangels exist and not vampires, werewolves or love scenes (although I  can already predict that Elli and Will are going to have something going on). I'm really psyched to start reading this book and It just seems different from what I've been reading recently. The cover, I'm not a big fan of but it's interesting.
Reviews I read- On GoodReads Angelfire seems to have gotten an average rating of 4.30 stars out of 5. One thing I did find in most reviews of this book was that the female MC, Ellie, is more independent and as two reviewers describe her: shes 'Upredictable' and has 'common sense'. So I cant wait to read this one as well!

Overall I'll have these reviews hopefully before Monday! So have you read any of these two books? If so what did you think? If not, what was your opinion when you 'First glanced' at these books?

So you know what's been on my mind? Gorillaz.

Not this kind of gorillas.

To those who don't know who Gorillaz are; they're basically a 'virtual band' who play a mix of pop/rap music.
To be honest, when I first heard about them I was a bit put off.
That is, until I received their Demon Days CD.
Then I fell in LOVE.
Here are some of my favorite songs from them

Review: Awaken by Katie Kacvinsky

Title- Awaken
Author--Katie Kacvinsky
Publisher-Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
At First Glance-My opinion before reading the book based on the synopsis, reviews I have read and cover attraction.

Plot-Awaken, a dystopian novel based in 2060. Where technology has now dominated the lives of everyone to the point where individuals spend 95% less communicating face to face. Crime, Teenage Pregnancy, Crime Rates and other issues have been reduced almost completely all because of Digital School and the advancement in technology. But at what cost?
Madeline Freeman is used to this lifestyle. Chatting with hundreds of people online every day without any worries. But she feels as if something is missing from her life. Then she meets Justin who teaches her the world outside technology and Madeline begins to see how much humans have enclosed themselves in their own little worlds. In this Novel, Madeline begins to struggle on whether to fight for what she believes to be right or to hurt those she loves.

As I stated before, I really like this plot. As I look at the 21st century, a future such as the one in Awaken seems to be more realistic every day. I felt like I could really relate to Madeline and her transition from an enclosed lifestyle to a more open environment without technology. Her struggle to do whats right also made me reflect to myself many times in the book where I asked myself 'Is technology really beneficial to us all?' Of course even today we face similar conflicts that we see in Awaken such as how much time we let technology dominate our lives and how much face to face interaction we actually do..

Characters- Madeline at first seemed like most of the teenagers I know today. Reluctant to get a life. But I got used to her as she progressed into the story and began to gain more of an independent personality. I like that she is reluctant to join the cause against DS showing that she's cautious and knows when to think for herself. She doesn't let her lifestyle affect her judgement on those who fight against DS or for those who support DS. She shows us the good and bad sides of both worlds, the digital and real world. Letting the reader see the pros and cons of both. I like Madeline but i'm not too Crazy about her.

Justin is just too stiff. Even when we begin to see his feelings I feel as if he's too distant from the reader and I can't really like him as a character.

Overall decision- I did find the story a little slow paced for me. Other than deciding whether she wants to fight with or against her father and a romantic struggle with Justin, Madeline didn't really have much to do. Of course, I love some romance in my books but I felt this book was more romantic and distracted me from what it was really about. But I still enjoyed reading it and from the ending I can tell there'll definitely be a sequel and i'll be waiting for it.

So I recommend this to anyone who's into dystopian novels. If your looking for anything action packed then don't look here because as I said before, the story can get a little slow. But I will definitely buy this once it hits the stores.

Review: The Lipstick Laws by Amy Holder

Title- The Lipstick Laws
Author- Amy Holder
Publisher- Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
At First Glance - My opinion before reading the book based on the synopsis, reviews I have read and cover attraction.

So first of let me say, when I got this book I was FREAKING OUT. I mean, my first ARC to review! How great was that?! Ok. Nerd moment over. Let's Begin

Plot- So as I stated in my 'At first Glance' post, this book is pretty much a common plot in most books i've read. In this book you see a lot of the issues that one faces in high school. Such as High School bullying, Teenage crushes and Self esteem issues. Of course, April is one of the 'low self esteem' types to the point where she ridiculously stuff her bra with tissues and refers to her breasts as 'sesame seeds'.

April, now in her sophomore year, she's alone and friendless and nobody knows who the hell she is. By random luck (or bad luck) she gets mixed in with the Queen Bee, Brittney Taylor and soon enough she gains instant popularity. After finding out that every one who Brittney deems worthy has to swear by the 'Lipstick Laws' she begins to see what shes gotten herself into as well as the consequences.April soon comes to realize the price that popularity comes with and is faced with choosing between popularity or what she believes is right.

The plot, isn't really that great or unique. I felt like I could predict what would happen after every chapter but it's a refreshing read. The book definitely gave me some laughs but other than that nothing. It pretty much is what it claims and seems to be. But April's Hilarious comments on everything going around her seemed to make it easier to read and enjoyable. Hell, I had a few laughs in the book too.

Characters- What I really liked about this book and that stood out  was that I actually LIKED the main character, April Bowers. Every other book that I have read that deals with this usually has the main character make STUPID choices. April Bowers in this case, doesn't really do this. Not only does she struggle with popularity she makes rational decisions. She's a strong female character who isn't let down by the brutality of Brittney and is shown as a smart girl who can think for herself and in this book, she really does apply her brains in the end.

The Antagonist, Brittney Taylor, is a typical Queen bee. She has her moments where you just want to think to yourself 'What the hell is up with this chick?'. Not too bright, not too dumb. Could have been better.

What I liked- The main character, April. I also liked the way Amy Holder applies the whole 'What price does popularity come with' in this book referred to as the 'Lipstick Laws' (If you haven't figured that out yet by the cover) Another thing I realized that was different for this book is that it doesn't really focus on Teen crushes. April has a crush on Matt and while she does have her oogly googly moments she stays true to her mission and that is to make Brittney pay.

What I didn't Like- Well other than the over used theme I felt like the characters could have had a little more depth to them instead of being 'cliche' and predictable. April had enough personality to keep me interested but sometimes you need more.

In the end
So overall, it was a good read. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to have a break from all the vampires, werewolves and warlocks. It's a refreshing read and I would recommend this book to my friends once it's out.

Upcoming Reviews: At First Glance

So I haven't posted recently (Shame on me) But today I got my hands on two awesome books! So i'm glad to announce two reviews coming sometime this week.

Synopsis-

Maddie lives in a world where everything is done on the computer. Whether it’s to go to school or on a date, people don’t venture out of their home. There’s really no need. For the most part, Maddie’s okay with the solitary, digital life—until she meets Justin. Justin likes being with people. He enjoys the physical closeness of face-to-face interactions. People aren’t meant to be alone, he tells her.
Suddenly, Maddie feels something awakening inside her—a feeling that maybe there is a different, better way to live. But with society and her parents telling her otherwise, Maddie is going to have to learn to stand up for herself if she wants to change the path her life is taking.
In this not-so-brave new world, two young people struggle to carve out their own space.

At First Glance- After reading the synopsis I got really excited for this one. A future where everything is all digital, unlike all other dystopian novels this is more realistic  to our world. We're slowly advancing into the 22nd century and technology has really advanced from what I can see. In no time, we may be faced with a future just like this one! Another thing that caught my attention was the cover. Ever hear 'Don't judge a book by it's cover?' Well I do. The cover is what attracts the readers to grab it and read what it's all about! While many may disagree with me, that's how I pick out my books form the library. Well, this cover really caught my eye. Not only is it not clustered, it all goes together. It's so simple yet strong.

 Synopsis-
At Penford High School, Britney Taylor is queen bee. She dates whomever she likes, rules over her inner circle of friends like Genghis Khan, and can ruin anyone's life as easily as snapping her perfectly manicured fingers. Just ask the unfortunate few who have crossed her.
For April Bowers, Britney is also the answer to her prayers. With zero friends and nothing close to a boyfriend, April is so unpopular, kids don't know she exists. That is, until Britney notices her. One lunch spent at Britney's table, and April is basking in the glow of popularity.
But Britney's friendship comes with a price tag.
How much is April willing to pay?

At First Glance-  I expected this book to be a typical 'bullied girl who gets back at bully and ends up with hottie' book. I mean, when I first looked at the synopsis it just came off as a red flag in my head that said 'cliche'. Ive read these type of books all the time; low self esteemed girl is bullied by the prima diva of the school and the girl somehow gets some panties to face the diva and ends up with a hot boyfriend in the end. Or some best friend. But I was wrong. It was actually a refreshing read and I really enjoyed it. Also, the cover is what drew me in, it's a clean yet simple cover.

I've already finished reading Lipstick Laws and will post a review tomorrow.

So what will you be reviewing this week?
